Silk weaving is a way of life in the rugged central highlands of Madagascar. The new 25-minute documentary, The Silkies of Madagascar tells the inspiring story of how a cooperative of talented village women have transformed their community and are preserving ancient traditions with the help of a Peace Corps volunteer and an international folk art market. The Silkies' story illustrates an important global trend. According to U.S. Ambassador at Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer, artisan businesses are the primary income source of people living in the developing world, second only to agriculture. Says the film's director David Evans: 'Financial Literacy coupled with opportunity for women in developing countries is going to change the world.'
