Scientists have just a month to study the vast, inhospitable and rapidly changing West Antarctic ecosystem. As part of the National Science Foundation's Long Term Ecological Research study, expert oceanographers must collect thousands of samples in an area the size of Oklahoma working from a research vessel that travels at the speed of a bicycle. The region's 85% decline in its Adelie penguin population is the greatest indication of climate change. Funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
